When your refrigerator stops working — whether your fridge leaks water, your freezer is not freezing, or your ice maker stopped making ice — the big question usually pops up: should we get refrigerator repair service or a new fridge?
Before you spend thousands on a new appliance, consider these five crucial facts. They explain why choosing our professional refrigerator repair service is often the smarter, more economical, and truly stress-free decision for Chicagoland homeowners.
As the owner of A Fast Local Refrigerator Repair, I’ve personally serviced over 22,000 refrigerators since 2003. These insights aren’t just my opinion; they’re based on decades of real-world experience and observations from thousands of service calls.
Here’s what I’ve learned in that time:
Back when I started fixing refrigerators in 2003, the average fridge we serviced was about 17 years old.
Contrast that with today: the majority of refrigerators we now service are barely 4 years old.
My own home is proof: my 1989 GE and 1984 Whirlpool fridges have had just one repair between them, back in 2006, and both are still running strong in 2025.
A professional fridge repair service from A Fast Local Refrigerator Repair will save you thousands of dollars compared to buying a new fridge. When you consider that a new appliance might not last as long as your current, more dependable model, repair is clearly the more financially sound choice.
Consider the Return on Investment (ROI):
Repairing your current unit means you invest less money for a better, more dependable appliance life. For example, if you spend $400 on a repair that adds 7 years of service to your reliable unit, your annual cost is only $57.14. Compare this to purchasing a $2,000 unit that fails in 5 years, resulting in an annual cost of $400. Repairing your old refrigerator delivers a significantly better financial return.
It might seem counterintuitive, but today’s complex, feature-packed appliances come with higher repair costs, often because of those very features, and they require service more frequently.
On top of that, energy efficient parts also cost more than their older equivalent. The modern variable-speed compressor and the inverter board that powers it are common failure points, and replacing these sealed system components requires specialized tools and technical expertise, raising the labor costs.
Then there is also the desire by manufacturers to purposely design a product that fails due to their greed. This practice, known as planned obsolescence, ensures not only will more repairs be needed over the life of the appliance, but it costs more for each appliance repair. So before you go shopping for a fridge with any bells and whistles like internal cameras or smart-home connectivity, consider the full life cycle consequences carefully.
Still weighing your options? We understand. But before you consider an expensive purchase, we strongly recommend getting your current fridge inspected by our expert refrigerator repairman.
An inexpensive service or repair from A Fast Local Refrigerator Repair is an investment in proven reliability. We back our work with an industry-leading 2-Year Warranty on parts and labor for the specific repair, which is a direct reflection of our confidence in both our technicians and the durable nature of the appliances we fix. This warranty offers better long-term protection than the typical one-year warranty on a brand-new appliance.
Plus, having a dependable appliance in your garage or basement provides invaluable peace of mind for that moment when, not if, your newer and less reliable fridge inevitably breaks down, sooner than you’ll expect. Our transparent pricing and dedication to quality service ensure you get maximum life out of your valuable appliance.

I was very concerned because there was a lot of ice in the bottom of my refrigerator. As soon as I called Scott, he set up an appointment for the next day, was on time and put my mind at ease. He answered every question and showed me pictures of the items that he needed to repair. It was certainly worth calling him instead of investing in a new refrigerator.Posted on Google![]()

I put in a request for service on my refrigerator Wednesday night, thru the BBB. explaining what the issue was. On Thursday morning, Scott called me and said he could come out today and give me an estimate between 3-5 pm. He arrived a little after 4:00, we talked a bit about was not working, I thought it was a bad fan. In about 2 minutes he had the fridge apart, and said yes, the fan had quit working. He went out to his truck, and came back with the fan. 20 minutes later my fridge was getting cold. These days you have to wait days for a visit, then wait again because they never have the part because it always has to be ordered. It was a refreshing change to have the work done quickly and properly. Scott was on time, professional, and did a great job. I would highly recommend him in the future.Posted on Google![]()
